Well well!! The league has tightened up a little and both unbeatens fell in week 5. The high flying Cal Bears fell to earth, and the Kentucky Wildcats were de-clawed. There are 4 teams banging on the door at 3-2. Here is the weekly roundup:

1) Cal Bears (4-1) – In showing what a tight race the DCFFL has become, Cal is only 6th in points scored to date. This could portend tough times ahead for GM Fooch Fucillo as high scoring competition awaits. Fooch could only manage 81 points in week 5, losing to Purdue 126-81. Cal’s 81 represented the lowest weekly score of any DCFFL team to date. Only TexasAM QB Jerrod Johnson could muster any decent offense, totaling 21.

2) Kentucky Wildcats (4-1) – Roger Fitch’ Wildcats were pummeled by Rutgers 178-130. Cental Michigan QB Dan LeFevour accounted for 25 points to lead the Wildcats. Fitch got scoring from his entire lineup, but most of it small potatoes – under 10 points. Fitch had highly regarding Washington QB Jake Locker on the bench in week 5; he would have contributed 24 had Locker been a starter.

3) Rutgers Scarlet Knights (3-2) – Bliss Bliss’ Knights scored their 2nd consecutive victory by topping previous unbeaten Kentucky. Bliss had some 9 (!) players on bye’s in week 5, and had 2 byes in the starting roster. Fortunately for Bliss, he got huge production from what few players he had. Houston QB Case Keenum topped 40 - 41 to be exact. And Stanford RB Toby Gerhart picked up 34 on 3 TDs. Bliss also collected 3 additional 20+ scorers in week 5.

4) Florida Gators (3-2) – Justin Rauffaf layed 203 on Penn State in a competitive week 5 win, the score was 203-176. Like Rutgers, the Gators had a ton of players on bye – 8 to be exact. Two 20+ players, and two 30+ players: RB Luke Lippincott Nevada (36) and RB Daniel Porter LaTech (30). They were joined by 42 point BMOC Stephen Williams of Toledo.

5) Buffalo Bulls (3-2) – GM Robert Occhipinti gets back into contention as Buff tops Oklahoma State 170-160. Occho got 20+ point contribution from 4 sources: QB Ryan Mallett Arkansas (24) , Marshall RB Darius Marshall (28), Buffalo WR Naaman Roosevelt adds 20 while GJ Kinne tacks on 20 with the Tulsa Hurricanes.

6) Purdue Boilermakers (3-2) – Rick McGlothlin has the lowest overall point total at 675, but stands at 3-2. Great D-Fence I suppose! Purdue knocked out formerly unbeaten Cal by a 128-81 count. McGlothlin got 38 from Toledo QB Aaron Opelt, but little else.

7) Penn State Nittany Lions (2-3) – sucks to be GM Joe Mays!! He’s the top point getter overall with 932, yet sits here in 7th. Back in week 4, Mays outscored Michigan 248-233 in a free-4-all. In week 5, Penn St dropped one to Florida 203-176. His South Florida Team D scored 31, while PSU QB Darryl Clark added 27 in a losing cause.

8) Oklahoma State Cowboys (2-3) – Brett Stott’s Cowboys are the 2nd leading point getter to date (919), but can’t get a break either. Its looks like Stott was caught asleep at the wheel in week 5: he lost by 10 to Buffalo, but had 28-pt RB Noel Devine (WVU) sitting on the bench while Vai Taua was in the starting lineup on a bye. Coulda shoulda woulda.

9) USC Trojans (2-3) – Your Truly’s Trojans utterly annihilated Michigan 233-104. Three players in the upper 30’s: Notre Dame WR Golden Tate (37), ULMonroe RB Frank Goodin (37) and Syracuse WR Mike Williams (36). Jonathan Dwyer got 14, but his Heisman hopes are fading with another mediocre performance.

10) Michigan Wolverines (2-3) – see mass destruction vs. USC. GM Mike Schottey did get points from his entire lineup, and least from the lineup he was able to field. His Wolverines were skating at a 1 man disadvantage. However none of those scorers could exceed 20 – Utah QB Max Hall’s 17 is the best of the sorry lot. Like several other teams in week 5, Schottey suffered from excessive byes and didn’t have much to pick from.

11) Florida State Seminoles (1-4) - Although FSU has only one win, they’re #3 in overall points scored. Unfortunately for GM Dale Bettinelli, his weekly opponents are saving FSU to blow up. FSU dropped a high-scoring nailbiter to Colorado, handing Tim Hudson’s Buffaloes their first win of the season. The score: 192-191 in a game that will rival USC-Texas in its intensity. Bettinelli possessed five 20+ point scorer on the week, led by Toledo WR Eric Page (28) and the TCU team defense. But Navy starting RB Marcus Curry bagged a doughtnut while 5 bench RB’s all scored points.

12) Colorado Buffaloes (1-4) – First win for GM Tim Hudson was a long time in coming. Wisconsin RB John Clay led the way with 36 for the Buffs. Hudson’s two starting QB’s Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame and Russell Wilson of NC State contributed 22 and 25, but they were outproduced by Hudsons bench QB’s Colin Kaepernick and Terelle Pryor who totaled 35 and 28.

Apologies for missing last weeks recap, will look to pick it back up here in week 5. Speaking of which, the top 2 performers are unclaimed by the 12 DCFFL participants. Namely UTEP RB Donald Bukram, whose 262 rushing yards and 4 TDs totaled 50 fantasy points. Nevada’s Mike Ball had 5 TDs vs UNLV on his way to 48 points.

Yours Truly’s USC squad had 3 top-10 contributors – WR’s Golden Tate of Notre Dame and Mike Williams of ‘Cuse (37 and 36). Add RB Frank Goodin of LA-Monroe, and you have the ingredients for USC’s 2nd win of the season.

Justin Rauffaf’s Florida Gators and the Colorado Buffalo’s Tim Hudson also scored 3 top-20 rosterees. Were they all in the starting lineup?? Wait a couple days for the recap . . .
The Cal Bears and star RB Jahvid Best got stuffed at Oregon yesterday, only putting up 3 offensive points as a team. However, despite the lack of point output from Best, Fooch Fucillo’s Cal Fantasy squad shrugged it off. Fucillo racked up the #1 and #4 overall point getters on week 4 – Texas A&M QB Jerrod Johnson (47) and Tulsa RB Andre Anderson (43).

The “real” Penn State Nittany Lions suffered a primetime setback to Iowa on Saturday night. But, like Cal, Joe Mays Fantasy PSU squad in the DCFFL kicked arse. Mays collected 3 top-20 performers: Utah State RB Robert Turbin (41), Tulsa WR Jeremy Williams (40) and So Miss QB Austin Davis (31).

Stayed tuned for the DCFFL weekly recap for standings/schedules.

Week 3 comes and goes, California and Kentucky remain undefeated in the Drafttek NCAA fantasy league. Kentucky got by USC 163-143, while Cal pounded Florida State. The Seminoles put 170 on the board, 4th highest total of the week, but still lost by a 221-170 count.

1) Kentucky Wildcats (3-0) – Roger Fitch remains in first after getting by USC. Same story as last week, Fitch relied on his entire roster to contribute, but didn’t roll any 30+ point monsters. WR’s Emmanuel Sanders (SMU 26 pts) and Blair White (Mich State 22 pts) led the way. Fitch had 41 pt Ryan Matthews (RB Fresno State) on the bench. Kentucky faces Oklahoma State in the DCFFL week 4 feature matchup.

2) Cal Bears (3-0) – GM Fooch Fucillo had a monster week! Cal Franchise RB Jahvid Best led the haul with 5 TD and 45 fantasy points. Jerrod Johnson (QB TexAM) and Ryan Broyles (WR Oklahoma) both tacked on 35.

3) Oklahoma State Cowboys (3-0) – would you believe that Cal’s 221 was not the high score of the week?? True – OSU piled on an unbelievable 234! Six players scored greater than 22, with four topping the 30 mark. West Viginia RB Noel Devine, OSU franchise WR Dez Bryant, Mizzou QB Blaine Gabbert and Minnesota WR Eric Decker scored 33, 32,32, and 31 respectively. Would you believe that GM Brett Stott’s score coulda be higher? NW QB Mike Kafka left 39 points on the table as starter Jevan Snead bagged “only” 22.

4) Florida Gators (2-1) - Justin Rauffaf moves up 3 spots by crushing Colorado by a 175-131 count. Dale got 34 from his OleMiss Team D, and was bolstered by a trio of 20 somethings: Western Michigan QB Tim Hiller (23), West Virginia WR Jock Sanders (23) and Nebraska RB Roy Helu (21) led the way.

5) Michigan Wolverines (2-1) - Scoreboard Baby! Mike Schottey edged Purdue 104-90 in a game neither deserved to win. Schottey got 18 points from potential 1st rounder Brandon LaFell (WR LSU), but had only two other players score > 10. Big names CJ Spiller (RB Clemson) and Heisman candidate Colt McCoy (QB Texas) could only contribute 7 and 8 respectively. But a win is a win!

6) Penn State Nittany Lions (1-2) – GM Joe Mays finally gets on the winning track by bumping off Buffalo 156-141. Mays had previously dropped two games despite scores of 187 and 165. Mays relied on three big contributors: The South Florida “D” bagged 36, QB Todd Reesing (Kansas) added 30 and RB Robert Turbin (UtahSt) contributed 26. Mays cannot be pleased with the 8 single-digit guys on his starting roster.

7) Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-2) - Rutgers lost by an even 100 (234-134) – GM Bill Bliss must feel like one of those Texas HS division 4 teams that somehow gets scheduled against the USA Today top 10 opponent. Bliss had some decent contribution, however the seemed to be playing one RB short. Ioaw State QB Arnaud Austin tallied 25 points on 2 rushing TDs, while Stanford RB Toby Gerhart added another solid effort with 23. High scoring Case Keenum was on the bench this week with a bye.

8) USC Trojans (1-2) – Yours Truly became the latest victim of the Kentucy Wildcats by a 163-143 count. Georgia Tech RB Jonathan Dwyer becomes the latest big name to go down to injury for my Trojans (Arrelious Benn the other). Texas Tech QB Tyler Potts had a comparatively slow week with only 26 points on 420 yards passing. Band jumper Golden Tate (WR Notre Dame) added 21. USC faces Buffalo in week 4 in a battle of evenly matched team (Buff scored 141 in week 3).

9) Purdue Boilermakers (1-2) – Rick “Mac” McGlothlin had a rough week, scoring only 90 points. Georgia WR AJ Green scored a full 1/3 of Mac’s point total with 30. A shocking lack of production at the QB position (7 total points) hurt the Boilermakers. Aaron Opelt (Toledo QB) could produce only 5 points against Ohio State, coming to earth after bagging 50 in week 2 vs. lesser opponentry.

10) Florida State Seminoles (1-2) – Like Penn State, GM Dale Bettinelli has suffered from a strong schedule. Dale scored well, but ran up against the Cal buzzsaw – final score 221-170. FSU got 20-baggers from 4 players: Hawaii WR Greg Salas (25), Alabama RB Mark Ingram (25), OkState QB Zac Robinson (24) and WesternMich WR Juan Nunez (22). And he left points on the bench – Boise St RB Jeremy Avery counted 34 on the week. FSU draws Rutgers in Week 4.

11) Buffalo Bulls (1-2) – GM Rob Occhipinti lost a close one to PSU 156-141. Ocho suffered from multiple weak contributors as 4 starters each scored less than 5 points. The remainder of the roster produced middling results, with no monster contributors to offset the weakness from the bottom of the lineup. The Bulls did get 20+ from two sources: Marshall RB Darius Marshall (24) and Kansas WR Dezmon Briscoe (20).

12) Colorado Buffaloes (0-3) – Tim Hudson still looking for his first win after dropping his 3rd loss in a row 175-131. And things don’t get any better as Cal represents Colorado’s week 4 opponent. Hudson got him some solid performances – Ohio St QB Terelle Pryor (35 pts) and SDSU WR Vincent Brown (26). But he will need to address the 3 goose-eggs in the starting lineup.

Drafttek Vikings analyst Brett Stott manages Oklahoma State. Among all the players in FBSworld during week 3, Stott had an unlikely 4 of them on his roster. NinersNation.com Editor-in-Chief Fooch Fucillo was not outdone by much – he sported 3 of the top-20 on his dockett, including the weeks top performer Jahvid Best. Best scored 5 TD for the real Cal Bears during week 3.

The week 3 recap will be prepared early in the week:

1) Kentucky Wildcats – Fitch got solid performance virtually top to bottom on his 12 player roster in order to beat Penn State 189-167. QB Jake Locker (UWash), RB DeMarco Murray (Okla) and WR Emmanual Sanders scored 29, 27 and 24 respectively. Could’ve been more – his WR Detron Lewis scored only 3 points. With Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts throwing for 400+ yards and 7 TD’s, Lewis missed out on his share of the pie due to injury.

2) Cal Bears – Fucillo stumbled into a low scoring 144-133 win over Florida. His score could’ve been much higher as both his starting QB’s scored goose-eggs. Fooch rode a 36 point effort from WR Ryan Broyles (Okla) and added 28 from Heismann candidate RB Jahvid Best – who still hasn’t played a full game. His Defense (uhh – Florida) added another 25.

3) Oklahoma State Cowboys – Brett Stott dropped a nailbiter 153-151 to Florida State. Tactical FF mistake cost Stott this game – kicker Josh Shene of OleMiss had the week off – Stott didn’t have a reserve K. Jacquizz Rodgers (RB-Oregon St) again scored big with 33 points. Te remainder of the roster all contributed, however there were no 20+ haymakers to join Rodgers.

4) USC Trojans – MY USC Trojans thumped hapless Rutgers 174-125 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. We look forward to the Week 3 contest v undefeated Kentucky. A handful of primetime performances overcame weakness elsewhere in the lineup. Taylor Potts (QB TexasTech) rolled up 46 while Kellen Moore (QB Boise St) added 26. RB Frank Goodin (Lousiana Monroe) tacked on 29 and WR Golden Tate of Notre Dame contributed 27. These 4 contributed 128 of my 174 total.

More to Follow . . .

5) Purdue Boilermakers - Rick McGlothlin’s Boilermakers pounded Buffalo 180-152. Mac made good use of namesake Purdue RB Ralph Bolden who scored 3 times and rolled up 36 points. Arizona RB Nick Grigsby added 33 for Mac, while Buffalo QB (what a traitor!) Zack Maymard also topped 30 points with 30 points!

6) Florida State Seminoles - Dale Bettinelli’s FSU squad posted their first win on the year by edging Oklahoma State 153-151. Hawaii WR Greg Salas and Cinci QB Tony Pike led a well balanced attack with 28 and 27, respectively.

7) Florida Gators - Justin Rauffaf’s Gators lost to Cal 144-143. FLA QB Tim Tebow (38 pts) couldn’t carry a plethora of poor performers. They’ll face Colorado in week 3.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights - Bill Bliss Rutgers squad was crushed by USC 174-125. QBs Case Keenum and Joe Webb scored big (31 and 24 points), but like Florida above, Bliss was plagued by numerous weak performers.

9) Michigan Wolverines - Big Blue gets into the hunt with a win over Colorado 170-164. QB Colt McCoy, RB CJ Spiller and the Iowa D led the way for owner Mike Schottey (33, 22, 31 pts) . UM faces Purdue in week 3.

10) Buffalo Bulls - Rob Occhipinti’s Bulls dropped one to Purdue 180-152. Naaman Roosevelt (Buffalo WR) had a big day with 2 scores and 30 points. But other than RB Cam Montgomery’s (North Texas) 23 points, Rob’s Bulls were plagued by low to middling performances.

11) Penn State Nittany Lions - Owner Joe Mays is wondering what it takes to win. Last week His Lions had the 4th highes score, but lost to Rutgers. This week Joe gets the 5th highest score but gets beat again. 189-165 to Kentucky. RBs Bryce Beall (Houston 27 pts) and Evan Royster (PSU 23 points) led a balanced attack in a losing cause.

12) Colorado Buffaloes - Tim Hudson dropped his second in a row. Although Tim looked like DivIII in week 1, at least the Buffs were competitive in week 2. Thye lost to Michgan in a high scoring near miss 170-164. Joe had a foursome of 20+ scorers, but he may have lost it by failing to notice Nevada’s bye week. RB Jake Sharp (Kansas), WR Mardy Gilyard (WR Cinci), WR Vince Brown (SDSU) and RB John Clay (RB Wisconsin) scored 33, 32, 23, and 20, respectively.

Until next week!!

My entry in the Drafttek College Fantasy Football League (DCFFL) is the “USC Trojans”. Per the rules of our league, I claim limited dominion over actual USC players. But despite real USC’s trouncing over the weekend of SJ State, my fantasy squad came up against the hottest team in the DCFFL – the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Managed by Brett Stott, his squad got production across the board:

1) 33 pts Jacquizz Rodgers RB Oregon St

2) 33 pts Blaine Gabbert QB Mizzou

3) 27 pts Cody Slate TE Marshall

My USC squad highlights:

1) Got 30 from Texax Tech QB Tyler Potts who passed for 405 yds

2) USC’s RB Joe McKnight added 28 on 145 yds – 2 TDs

3) Georgia Tech Heisman candidate Jonathan Dwyer didn’t play much against Jax St with just 7 carries. But this dearth of carries produced 95 yards and 21 pts.

But it was the receiving corp which let the squad down. Damian Williams (USC) netted 7 points, Golden Tate added 6, while Arrelious Benn went out with an ankle injury and did not contribute. Ed Dickson, an early round draft prospect, didn’t help either with only 2 catches for 19 yds.

Next Week Drafttek-USC (DT-USC) faces DT-Rutgers. DT-R doesn’t have the big names, but managed to do 19 pts better than DT-USC in week 1. That 200 passing (2TD)/200 rushing (2TD) effort by UAB’s Joe Webb had to be a fluke . . .

-War
