Well it was one of the more entertaining days of football that we’ve seen in 2009, with 2 overtime games and quite a few dramatic endings in games around the NFL. The only two undefeated teams entering week 11 action remained unbeaten, while some strong teams took a stumble with losses to teams they had no business losing to at this juncture in the season.
Playoff positioning is still a little blurry right now, albeit some teams have pretty much sealed their post-season fate. Meaning they won’t be participating in it. As a result there is a bit of shuffling in the rankings this week as a result of the upsets and other outcomes, so let’s see what it looks like after Week 11:
1.(1) New Orleans (10-0) – Ripped the Bucs apart after trailing 7-0 to start the game. Good tune-up for what will be one of the most highly anticipated Monday Night Football matchups in a long, long time next week.
2.(2) Indianapolis (10-0) – Colts defense stymied the NFL’s # 10 scoring offense by forcing 5 FG’s (and a sixth one that missed) including a goalline stand with Baltimore on the Colts half-yardline, first and goal. Brackett’s pick with 2:25 to go sealed the deal and lifts Indy to 10-0.
3.(3) Minnesota (9-1) – The Machine was revved up and in full force against the Seahawks. Brett Favre breaks another Marino record with his 22nd game with at least 4 touchdown passes.
4.(6) New England (7-3) – Absolutely abused the rookie QB and the Jets defense, although they allowed New York to make a small charge in the 2nd half. No matter, as the focus is now on the intriguing contest in the Superdome next Monday night with the New Orlean Saints.
5.(4) Cincinnati (7-3) – Inexcusable loss against a team they had every opportunity to put away throughout the game. This one may come back to haunt the Bengals, or may provide the humble pie necessary to re-focus the entire team.
6.(7) San Diego (7-3) – For the second straight season the Chargers come back from a poor start to the season and recapture the division lead from the Broncos. With the Charger D getting a bit healthier and the SD wideouts gaining more and more confidence, they could be tough to beat come playoff time.
7.(5) Pittsburgh (6-4) – Major stumble for the Steelers on the road to the playoffs. Perhaps they took KC a bit too lightly but whatever the cause, it led to a huge upset loss that will affect playoff seeding and cost them a chance to gain on the division leading Bengals who lost at Oakland.
8.(8) Arizona (7-3) – Never any doubt in this one, even after Kurt Warner left the game with a head injury. Tennessee and Minnesota up next.
9. (9) Dallas (7-3) – Playing at home against one of the most inept offensive teams in the NFL, the Cowboys manage to eek out a 7-6 win in the last couple of minutes. The Giants, San Diego and New Orleans are coming up next on the Cowboy schedule after a visit from the Raiders.
10.(11) Philadelphia (6-4) – Fortunate to pull out a win in Chicago after losing the ball on fumbles three times.
11.(13) New York Giants (6-4) – Could very well be at .500 right now but the Giants sneak out their first win that, according to Eli Manning, hasn’t happened in the past “42 days” for New York.
12.(15) Green Bay (6-4) – Allowed the 49ers to come back and make it close, but the Pack hang on to a 6-point win.
13.(15) Jacksonville (6-4) – Jags use a late TD pass and 2 point conversion to keep their playoff hopes alive.
14.(15) Baltimore (5-5) – Could not capitalize on several Colts turnovers and made two critical mistakes of their own late in the 4th quarter.
15.(9) Denver (6-4) – The freefall continues to the reeling Broncos. 6-0 has turned into a nightmare as Josh McDaniels and Co. search for answers. Pulling Simms so early wasn’t one of them IMHO.
16.(10) Atlanta (5-5) – The implosion continues in the ATL. Mattie isn’t so “Icy” anymore and the Falcons are stumbling their way right out of the playoff hunt. Give the Dirty Bird’s credit for coming back from 14 down with 6 minutes to go in the game to force the coin toss for OT.
17.(22) Tennessee (4-6) – Vince Young has now led the Titans to four wins in a row and the defense is performing better.
18.(14) Houston (5-5) – No one in Houston red, white and blue can say they weren’t given the perfect opportunity to move to that next level in their program. They were. And they didn’t.
19.(20) Miami (5-5) – Ricky Williams carries Miami to a big Thursday night victory over the Carolina Panthers with three TD’s.
20.(17) San Francisco (4-6) – Great comeback effort, but the fact they allowed Green Bay such a sizeable lead (23-3 and 30-10) was the fatal flaw in this one.
21.(21) Carolina (4-6) – Perhaps the Panthers should get acquainted with a power running game and limit the amount of passing plays.
22.(16) N.Y. Jets (4-6) – Not sure if Rex Ryan will need tissues after this one but Mark Sanchez certainly might. He looked like a really bad rookie QB.
23.(21) Chicago (4-6) – The Bears lose for the fifth time in six games even though Chicago forced three Eagle fumbles.
25.(26) Kansas City (3-7) – Pulled off the most amazing upset of the year thus far, burning the Steelers in OT. Could this be the win that lays the groundwork for a franchise turnaround?
26.(27) Oakland (3-7) – On any given Sunday, right ?
25.(24) Washington (3-7) – Did anyone really think they’d win 6-0? I figured they had to have that last FG to seal the deal, but alas……
26.(23) Seattle (3-7) – Well folks, that performance really sucked, didn’t it ? I think the critical factor was the 4 yards total rushing. Maybe.
27.(25) Buffalo (3-7) – Well, at least TO “got his” even though interim coach Perry Fewell didn’t.
28.(30) Detroit (2-8) – If that game-winning drive doesn’t endear Matt Stafford to the hearts of Lions fans, then nothing will.
29.(29) St. Louis ( 1-9) – It’s not going to be evident in the “W” column very soon, but the Rams ARE showing signs of a turnaround too.
31.(31) Tampa Bay (1-9) – They hung tough early, but eventually were just overwhelmed by a much better ballclub.
32.(32) Cleveland (1-9) – I couldn’t conjure up a more devastating way to lose for an organization already in the midst of chaos.
